Here is the list of eligible scholarships available through the Mount Baker Scholarship Foundation.

Descriptions and requirements are listed for each.

• Sarah Baisden Memorial Scholarship Endowment

  There will be a scholarship awarded in memory of Sarah Baisden in the amount of $500.
  
  Scholarship criteria as follows:

  1. This scholarship is available for a student attending a technical school, a community college, or a 4 year college.
  2. Minimum of a 3.0 GPA
  3. Merit and community activities
  4. Personal hardship factors will be taken into consideration: examples include, loss of employment, medical expenses, etc.
  5. Applicant must provide a 500 word personal essay.

• Kourtney Cadle Memorial Scholarship

  There will be one scholarship awarded to a male graduate, and one scholarship awarded to a female graduate, both in the amount of $1,000. These scholarships will be awarded to the students who best reflect Kourtney's values, as follows in this order of priority.
  

  1. Excellence in academics, demonstrated by being on the honor roll.
  2. Be involved in high school athletics.
  3. Have an interest or aptitude in art

• Castle Scholarship Endowment

  1. An annual scholarship shall be awarded to a graduating senior from Mount Baker High School who will attend a 4 year public school (does not need to be within Washington state but must be public).
  2. Selection criteria shall be based on performance and merit, not financial need.

• Clyde and Judy Denton Scholarship Endowment

  A portion of the earnings from the Endowment shall be used to provide scholarships to selected individuals who:

  1. Demonstrate a need for financial assistance.
  2. Have a clearly stated goal of pursuing education or training for the purpose of achieving gainful employment in a specific industry or field.
  3. Are United States citizens graduating from Mount Baker High School and meet the following criteria:
     
     Cumulative grade point average (GPA) from all high school classes is the minimum stated GPA for type of school that applicant is applying for.
     

     Type of School	GPA
     A) Accredited two-year technical or vocational school	3.0
     B) Community college	3.4
     C) State or 4 year university	3.8

     
     A maximum of five scholarships will be awarded, with no more than two for each type of school. There shall be no minimum number of scholarships. Any earnings not awarded in a given year shall be retained and added to the Endowment's principal.

• Don and Bill Easterbrook Scholarship

  The Don and Bill Easterbrook Scholarship is awarded to a qualifying Mount Baker High School student who has a goal of attaining a major in the sciences and eventually engaging in scientific research.
  
  Don Easterbrook is a scientist and teacher who retired from Western Washington University in 1997. He is generously providing this scholarship of $5000 for each of 2 years to assist in covering tuition and fees for the chosen student in their 4 year college/university. A renewal of the scholarship is dependent on making satisfactory progress toward the science degree.
  
  The Applicant must:
  

  • Plan to earn a degree in the sciences with the aim of research in his or her field
  • Show financial need
  • Plan to attend a 4 year college or university
  • Be a Mount Baker High School graduating senior
  • Have applied to and been accepted to a year institution of higher learning
  • Have maintained a minimum of 3.0 GPA in high school
  • Actively participated in school/or community activities

• George and Tena Giarde Scholarship Endowment

  George and Tena Giarde, longtime residents and farmers, wish to honor the fine education their daughters, Dorothy Giarde Royal (Class of '55), and Nancy Giarde Burke, (Class of '58), received in the Mount Baker School District.
  
  The Giarde Scholarship Endowment Fund shall be awarded to a graduating Mount Baker High School senior to be used for books, supplies and/or tuition.
  
  The Applicant will:

  1. Have a demonstrated need for financial assistance,
  2. Have enrolled in a 2 or 4 year academic or vocational school,
  3. Exhibit high moral values, strong character and good judgment,
  4. Exhibit respect for teachers and fellow students,
  5. Exhibit perseverance and hard work throughout high school.

• Thomas and Martina Horn Foundation Scholarship

  The Thomas and Martina Horn Foundation awards multiple scholarships annually to graduating seniors from Mt Baker High School in support of their continuing education. Thomas and Martina were long time local residents; their legacy lives on in the form of scholarships for Bellingham and Whatcom County students.

• Calvin and Alice Johnson Scholarship Endowment

  1. An annual scholarship shall be awarded to a graduating senior from Mount Baker High School.
  2. This scholarship shall be used for books, supplies and/or tuition.
  3. Selection criteria utilized in determining the recipient of the award shall be as follows (not necessarily in this order):
     1. The applicant will have enrolled in a 4-year academic school.
     2. Exhibit attitudes of cooperation and participation in class.
     3. Exhibit respect for teachers and fellow students.
     4. Exhibits concern for others through volunteering in the community.

  
  These restrictions shall remain in effect until the Mount Baker Scholarship Foundation, in collaboration with the Alice Johnson Family, determines specific changes are necessary.

• Robert & Kathleen Lange Scholarship Endowment

  1. An annual scholarship shall be awarded to a graduating senior from Mount Baker High School. This award will be renewable for 4 years if all criteria are met.
  2. This scholarship shall be used for books, supplies and/or tuition.
  3. Completion of each year, proof of enrollment form for the succeeding term before any scholarship funds are awarded.
  4. Selection process will be as follows:
     1. Have a minimum of 3.5 GPA.
     2. Have a strong concentration in mathematics and physical sciences. Physical sciences defined as chemistry, biochemistry, physics, geology, astronomy, and other established major subjects of study of natural laws and processes other than those peculiar to living matter.
     3. Financial need will be a consideration.
     4. Be a Mt. Baker High School senior and enrolled at Mt. Baker for at least 3 years.
     5. Participation in extracurricular activities, field of study is not required.
     6. The student must be of good personal character.
     7. The student must be a US citizen.
     8. Parents/Guardians must reside in the Mt. Baker School District.
  5. Other criteria:
     1. Be enrolled full time. (Exceptions may be granted for extenuating circumstances such as an illness.) A written request will be required for consideration of an exception.
     2. Preference will be given to a student enrolling in a major 4-year institution; however, a community college will be acceptable if financial needs are warranted.
     3. The recipient will be required to maintain a 3.5 GPA average for each year of attendance, or the scholarship shall be terminated. This requirement may be waived if extenuating circumstances exist. The recipient will be required to request an exception in writing to MBSF.
     4. If there are no qualified applicants in any given year, then no award shall be given.
     5. If a scholarship recipient changes his major field of study to one which does not qualify under the rules as stated above, then the scholarship will be terminated.

• Tim Lockerby Technical School Endowment

  1. An annual scholarship shall be awarded to a graduating senior from Mount Baker High School.
  2. This scholarship shall be used for books, supplies and/or tuition.
  3. Selection criteria utilized in determining the recipient of the award shall be as follows (not necessarily in this order):
     1. The applicant will have enrolled in a 2 or 4 year academic or vocational school.
     2. Exhibit attitudes of cooperation, helpfulness, and participation in class.
     3. Exhibit respect for teachers and fellow students.
     4. Exhibit perseverance and hard work throughout high school.
     5. Preference will be given to applicants pursuing a welding profession.

• Jim and Evie Maricle Scholarship Endowment

  The scholarships are given in memory of Jim (MBHS 1945) and Evie Maricle by their children Rick, Cindy, and Rob (all MBHS grads).

  1. Two Scholarships will be given each year.
  2. The applicants must be enrolled in:
     • 4 Year academic school
     • 2 Year academic school
     • Vocational or Tech school
  3. Area of study:
     1. Medical
     2. STEM
     3. Trades, if no other students qualify for Medical or STEM
  4. Other criteria to be considered:
     1. Exhibits high moral values, strong character and good judgement.
     2. Demonstrates leadership, hard work, and perseverance.

• Dorothy Massie Scholarship Endowment

  • The candidate must be a graduate of Mount Baker High School.
  • The candidate must have attended Mount Baker Hight School for a minimum of 2 years, but preference shall be given to students who at attended for 3 years or more.
  • The candidate shall be a person of high moral character.
  • The candidate shall be a person who shows interest in scholarship and learning and who give promise of profiting greatly by a scholarship and one who state serious plans for completion of higher education in an accredited college or university.
  • No preference shall be given because of athletic ability.
  • Special consideration shall be given to those students who desire to study science, mathematics, nursing or teaching.
  • The money for the scholarship shall be given to the recipient only after the successful completion of the first quarter or semester at the college or university of his or her choice and upon being enrolled for the next quarter or semester in such college or university.
  • An announcement of the award winner shall be made at the commencement program of Mount Baker High School.

• Thorleif (Thor) Mohn Scholarship Endowment

  It is agreed the investment earnings on the principal of the Thorleif (Thor) Mohn Scholarship Endowment Fund shall be used for the following purpose.

  1. All Senior students should be eligible to apply regardless of their future education plans. Students planning on attending trade, vocational, art schools, community colleges and 4 year colleges and other educational programs should be treated on an equal basis.
  2. If two applicants are nearly equal in terms of qualifications, preference in the size of a grant shall go to the applicant who demonstrates the greater financial need.
  3. I have a special love for fisheries and fisheries’ maintenance and enhancement. If any applicant should indicate a vocational or educational future interest in this or a closely related field, I wish to give him or her a special preference in obtaining a larger grant of assistance.
  4. These scholarships will be used for books and tuition.
  5. The scholarships could be deemed to be ongoing, depending on the earnings and/or availability of funds.

• Loren and Muriel Monsen Scholarship Endowment

  If you want to be considered for the Monsen Scholarship, please follow these instructions.
  In addition to the standard application essay, you need to write a paragraph describing how you have fulfilled the selection criteria:

  1. Exhibits high moral values, strong character and good judgement.
  2. Exhibits concern for others through volunteering in the community.
  3. Demonstrates leadership, hard work, and perseverance.

  These are funds collected each year at their annual reunion from past graduates of MBHS.

• Mount Baker Staff Scholarship

  1. An annual scholarship shall be awarded to a graduating senior from Mount Baker High School.
  2. This scholarship shall be used for books, supplies and/or tuition.
  3. Selection criteria utilized in determining the recipient of the award shall be as follows (not necessarily in this order):
     1. The applicant will have enrolled in a 2 or 4 year academic or vocational school.
     2. Exhibit attitudes of cooperation, helpfulness, and participation in class.
     3. Exhibit respect for teachers and fellow students.
     4. Exhibit perseverance and hard work throughout high school.
     5. Preference will be given to applicants pursuing a teaching or social service profession.
  4. Selection process will be as follows:
     1. The Mt. Baker Scholarship Foundation’s screening process will determine final applicants.
     2. Scholarships appropriate in amount, at a minimum of $500, and timing of distribution as determined by the Mt. Baker Scholarship Foundation.
     3. These restrictions shall remain in effect until the Mt. Baker Scholarship Foundation, in collaboration with the Mount Baker staff, determines specific changes are necessary.

• Mount Baker Scholarship Foundation Endowment

  The Mt Baker Scholarship Foundation awards 20 or more scholarships each year to eligible students in the Mt Baker district.
  
  To apply students must:

  • Be currently enrolled as a senior at Mt. Baker High School.
  • Plan to attend a technical, community, or 4 year university in the Fall of
  • Submit a complete MBSF scholarship application by March 22, 2024
  • Submit updated transcript with current classes listed as well.

• Louise E. Peterson Scholarship

  The Louise E. Peterson Scholarship is awarded to a qualifying Mount Baker High School senior. Louise Peterson was a devoted teacher and the mother of Cathy Harris, Mt. Baker Junior High Principal from 1991-1999.
  This scholarship,up to $10,000/year, can covers costs of tuition, fees, and/or books for up to 4 years while attending either a Washington state community college, leading to graduation from a 4 year WA state college, or 4 years attendance at a public WA state college.
  Renewal of the scholarship for continuing years is dependent on making satisfactory progress in the college of your choice and maintaining at least a 2.5 academic average. The Louise E. Peterson Scholarship, which was established in 2002, can be used for up to $10,000 year for room/board if the student applying is the recipient of a College Bound Scholarship from WA state.
  
  A preferred Applicant:

  • Plans to become a certified teacher, but may pursue a degree in another area of study,
  • Show financial need,
  • Plans to attend either:
    • Two years at a community college in Washington state and then transfer to a state WA college/university for a degree program,
    • OR
    • 4 years at a state WA college/university,
  • Be a Mount Baker High School graduating senior.
  • Have applied to either a community college (for AA degree and transfer to a state college/university for 2 years) or to a state WA college/university for 4 years
  • Have maintained a minimum of a 2.50 GPA.
  • Has actively participated in school/or community activities

  Special consideration will be given to minority students and students of color. Consideration can be given to students entering fields of study that may provide assistance to others, or students entering areas of study for which the demand for graduates is great.

• Howard Ernest Rothenbuhler/
  Acmenormous Scholarship Endowment

  It is agreed the investment earnings on the principal of the Howard Ernest Rothenbuhler / Acmenormous Scholarship endowment fund shall be used for the following purpose:

  1. An annual scholarship shall be awarded to a graduating senior from Mount Baker High School.
  2. This scholarship shall be used for books, supplies and/or tuition.
  3. Selection criteria utilized to determine the recipient of the award shall be as follows (in this order):
     1. The applicant must plan on and use the scholarship in one or more of the following fields of study at a 2 year college, vocational, trade school or 4 year university;
        1. Electrical or mechanical engineering
        2. Forestry
        3. Law enforcement
        4. Fire science
     2. Be a citizen of the United States.
     3. There will be no sexual preference.
     4. Preference given to a student that has volunteered in the community.
     5. Exhibit attitudes of cooperation, helpfulness, and participation in class.
     6. Exhibit respect for teachers and fellow students.
     7. Exhibit perseverance and hard work throughout high school.
     8. The Mt. Baker Scholarship Foundation’s screening process will determine final applicants.
     9. Show financial need.
     10. Scholarships appropriate in amount, at a minimum of $500, and timing of distribution as determined by the Mt. Baker Scholarship Foundation.
     11. If funds are available, a second year continuing scholarship to a recipient may be funded as determined by the Mt. Baker Scholarship Foundation.
     12. There shall be no minimum number of scholarships. Any earnings not awarded in a given year or unused shall be retained and added to the Endowment’s principal.

• Jerry Smoot Scholarship Endowment

  This scholarship may be used for college, community college, or technical school training.
  
  Criteria:

  1. Minimum GPA of 2.5.

• Mandy Stavik Scholarship Endowment

  The Endowment shall award scholarships to Mount Baker High School graduates who have taken an active part in the Mount Baker High School Music Program, including participation in their senior year.
  The scholarship will be awarded based also on these additional criteria:

  1. Associated Student Body (ASB) activity
  2. School and community activity
  3. High school academic record
  4. Work experience
  5. Athletic participation

• Dr. Christine Sygitowicz-Sherman Scholarship Endowment

  The Endowment Fund shall be used to award a scholarship to a female graduate of Mount Baker High School who meets the following criteria. Financial need will not be a primary consideration.
  
  The Applicant must:

  1. Maintain a 3.8 GPA throughout high school.
  2. Have taken the entire math/science sequence at Mount Baker High School, and maintained a 3.8 GPA in each course. If the applicant has transferred into Mount Baker High School, the Mt. Baker Scholarship Foundation may choose to waive this criterion.
  3. Have the intention of pursuing one of the following courses of study:
     1. Physics,
     2. Chemistry,
     3. Biochemistry,
     4. Math,
     5. Molecular Biology,
        The Mt. Baker Scholarship Foundation may also consider applicants, on an individual basis, who wish to pursue the following courses of study:
     6. Geology,
     7. Geophysics,
     8. Geochemistry,
     9. Botany
        If an applicant is enrolling in a course of study that she feels meets the spirit of the above categories (i.e. “hard science”), but does not fall into one of those categories, she may petition the Mt. Baker Scholarship Foundation.
  4. Apply to a major research or regional institution. Two-year institutions are not acceptable.
  5. Have participated in extracurricular activities that demonstrate leadership qualities (i.e. Honors Program; ASB).

  
  The math and science department chairperson shall ascertain that the final recipient has met all of the high school qualifications. If no applicant meets all of the criteria, Mt. Baker Scholarship Foundation may award a lesser amount scholarship.
  
  The scholarship recipient must maintain a 3.0 GPA in their first quarter or semester of college before any endowment funds are disbursed.
  
  The Mt. Baker Scholarship Foundation will determine the Scholarship’s appropriate amount and timing of distribution.

• Karen Marie Wolschlagel Scholarship Endowment

  It is agreed the investment earnings on the principal of the Karen Marie Wolschlagel Scholarship Endowment Fund shall be used for the following purpose.

  1. An annual scholarship shall be awarded to a graduating senior from Mount Baker High School.
  2. This scholarship shall be used for books, supplies and/or tuition.
  3. Selection criteria utilized to determine the recipient of the award shall be as follows (in this order):
     1. The applicant will have enrolled in a school to pursue an education in cosmetology.
     2. Be a citizen of the United States.
     3. Financial need will be a primary consideration.
  4. There will be no sexual preference.
  5. In the event that no applicant applies that is pursuing an education in cosmetology, then the scholarship shall be awarded to another individual, utilizing the above listed criteria (in order).

• Harold J. Young Memorial Scholarship

  There will be a scholarship memorial for Harold J. Young with the following criteria.

  1. Mount Baker Senior High graduating student.
  2. GPA of 3.0; OR, upward trend junior and senior year.
  3. Accepted into a four year university, community college, or professional certification program.
  4. Consideration given to students pursuing certificated programs that provide assistance to their communities (medicine, education, social work, ROTC/military commitment, etc.).

• Glen Ziegler Memorial Scholarship Endowment

  David Morgan, class of 1958, and his wife, Wendy, established a scholarship in honor of David's former Mt. Baker High School teacher, Glen Ziegler.
  Glen Ziegler was David's teacher and advisor for Future Farmers of America (FFA) while he attended Mt. Baker High School from 1954-58.
  The Morgans coordinate with an FFA advisor to identify graduating students to receive the Glen Ziegler Memorial Scholarship.
  The scholarship is $10,000 and may be renewed for four years if the student remains in school.
